An incomplete, copper alloy mount in the form of a sitting bird, of probable Roman dating (AD 43 to AD 410). The mount was probably part of a bucket or other vessel
The mount consists of a moulded copper alloy sitting bird with a flat base. The underside of the base shows evidence of connection to another object, possibly an iron ring, as in similar examples.
The head of the bird is tilted back from a curved neck. The head is large in comparison to the body and is almost spherical. The beak of the bird is also large and hooked, more like a flamingo than a bird of prey. The beak is pierced, possibly to emphasise the hooked shape and give the appearance of being open. The head of the bird is pierced right through to represent the eye of the bird. The body of the bird tapers quite sharply to form the tail. It is unclear whether this provides another attachment point,
The mount measures 38.14 mm in length, 15.62 mm wide and 43 mm tall. It weighs 43.8 g.
The mount is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Similar bucket mounts with birds have been recorded on the PAS database as LIN-3AEB83, LIN-F1A832, DENO-D6BA62 and BH-6682F5.
