Medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla of 14th to 16th century date
The ampulla is near-complete, missing the loops and with some damage to the mouth and neck (with a length of 60.5mm and a weight of 78.1g). The mouth is moderately expanded (with a width of 29.5mm) and is partially open. The sides of the neck are straight and convergent to the body of the ampulla. The stubs of the missing loops are evident on both sides, beginning at the base of the neck (with a length of 11mm - 13mm). The neck is oval sectioned (with a maximum depth of 14.4mm) and is without any discernible decoration. The body of the ampulla is rounded (giving a maximum width of 33.8mm). The obverse face is convex (12.3mm deep) and depicts the scallop shell with bold radiating ribs of Spencer's (1990) Type I. The reverse face is flat, now slightly dished at the centre and is without any obvious moulding or decoration.
