Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Polden Hill type and of 1st or early 2nd century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin, foot, catch-plate and one of the wings (with a surviving length of 52.0mm, a surviving depth of 20.7mm and a weight of 17.1g). The pin has broken from a copper alloy spring mechanism around an iron axis bar. The cylindrical wing is undecorated except for an expanded terminal (8.2mm maximum diameter). One of the wings in now missing, probably from a recent break (with a surviving width across the head of 22.1mm, originally c. 32mm). There are curving mouldings around the sides of the head (with a width of 10.7mm), enhanced with notches. The bow is of D-shaped section, with straight sides, gradually converging the break across the leg. No decoration is now discernible on the corroded bow. The missing catch-plate descends as a rib from the underside of the head. The surface is partially preserved with a mid-green patina.
