Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch fragmentary, missing the leg and pin (with a surviving length of 41.1mm, a surviving depth of 15.8mm and a weight of 16.8g). The missing spring was secured around a single, perforated lug on the rear of the head. Iron corrosion around the lug suggests that an iron spring was used. The trumpet head is sub-oval (20.0mm long and 16.7mm wide), probably with the remains of a truncated and rounded plate at the head, which was possibly surmounted with an integral chain-loop. The head-plate was decorated with a double-rope moulding above a deeper panel, flanked by grooves and above the bow. The bow is of oval section and narrows before widening again to the button on the mid-bow. The front of the bow is heavily-corroded but had a central, double knurled rib or rope moulding. The button extends on to the rear of the bow but corrosion has removed all detail from the button, which may have been of acanthus form. The leg is heavily-truncated and appears to have been of D-shaped section. There is no surviving evidence for the top of the catch-plate on the rear of the leg. The corroded surface has a mid to dark-green patina.
