Late Medieval to early Post-Medieval copper alloy chafing dish handle of 15th to 17th century date.
The handle is complete and of bifurcating form, with a stud for attachment to the dish (with an overall length of 55.0mm and weighing 33.7g). The looped handle (48.4mm long, 59.9mm wide at the bifurcated end and 27.9mm wide at the attachment end) is of sub-rectangular section, possibly faceted but corroded at the edges (between 3.6mm and 4.5mm thick and between 4.4mm and 7.4mm wide). The attachment lug (17.1mm long) is of rectangular section (with a maximum width of 14.4mm and thickness of 8.4mm) and possibly faceted but now rounded. The lug was attached using an integral circular-sectioned rivet, now truncated (6.2mm diameter and 2.8mm long). The surface is corroded with remnants of a dark-green patina and with file marks evident on both faces of the handle and on the lug.

Notes:

The handle closely resembles those found at Norwich, as recorded by Margeson (1993, p.81, nos. 489-491) especially no. 491 which has the same two-lobed form, which has been dated to the 15th and 16th centuries. Lewis also records chafing dishes with two-lobed handles of 16th to 17th century date and suggests that they may be particular to Britain, as only one had been found on the Continent at that time (Lewis, 1978, p. 35) .
