Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of Chester sub-type (Hull's Type 154) and Bayley and Butcher 2004, Group C of 2nd century AD dated
The brooch is incomplete, missing the foot, catch-plate and spring and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 39.7mm, a surviving depth of 20.0mm and a weight of 6.1g). The missing spring was secured around a perforated lug, at the rear of the head. Iron corrosion around the lug suggests that an iron axis bar and possibly also an iron spring was employed. The trumpet-head is oval (10.2mm long and 9.5mm wide) with no surviving evidence for a chain-loop at the head. The top of the bow is sub-triangular at the head and the sides are concave, widening to the button. No applied decoration is evident on the upper bow. The button may have been of acanthus form but little detail now survives. The leg was of D-shaped section, with straight sides converging to the break, probably just above the missing foot. A low rib on the rear of the leg indicates the remnants of the catch-plate. The surface is worn and has a dark-brown patina with areas mid-green corroded surface loss.
Notes:
The brooch is of Hull's 'Chester' Type 154, which he dated from the 2nd century AD. The type is seen to have a distribution concentrated in the South West of Britain, around the lower Severn.
Class:
Trumpet. Group C (Bayley and Butcher 2004), further devolved. The head is usually based on a flat plate. Waist-moulding may lobed acanthus or petalled or with plain or leaf-shaped multiple mouldings
