FINGER RING

Unique ID: SOM-5C93B4

Object type certainty: Certain

Post Medieval copper alloy finger ring with posy inscription on the inner side. The ring has a D-shaped section and is formed of a strip soldered together at the ends. The join is visible and the white metal solder now projects, probably as the surface it used to abut has corroded away. The inscription is worn but reads 'I loue V til death' (I love you until death) in italic script. There are no traces of gilding visible but the exterior surface in patricular is very corroded. The hoop is distorted to an oval shape, 26.0mm by 14.8mm, 4.2mm wide and 1.7mm thick. It weighs 2.39 grams.

Oman (1974, pg 41) suggests that italic inscriptions generally replaced those of Roman capitals in the second quarter of the 17th century, until posy rings became unfashionable in the 19th century. 2011 T435 (SUSS-58B078) with a similar inscription was dated to 1640-1650 based on the makers mark while 2012 T555 (SUSS-3D38A5) again with a similar inscription was dated to 1625-1800. Without a makers mark a broader date range is also suggested here.

Inscription: I loue V til death
