A long piece of copper alloy which is possibly a casket binding strip or other fitting of probable Medieval date, about AD 1150 - 1500. The rod is mainly sub-square in cross section, tending towards circular in places. In the centre, which is the thickest part, is a copper alloy rievt with a large rectangular head. The rivet appears to be separate. It passes through the bar at an angle and projects slightly on the other side. One end of the bar curves upwards into a large oval loop which is not closed. The bar ends beyond the central rivet, having curved back on itself to form the loop. The other end starts to bend at the same place, but is at a shallow angle and twisted slightly to the side. Stress marks in the patina at the bend indicate that this was not its original form. The arm continues outwards, with some other slight bends. It terminates in a flattened end forming a blunt wedge. The object has a well developed green patina and is 88.5mm long, 26.2mm wide across the loop, 5.8mm wide across the rod, and 6.5mm thick at the rivet. 13.35g.

One suggestion for function is as a casket binding strip or handle attachment. Compare Egan (1998) Medieval Households, page 69 onwards. It could also be another form of fitting or fixture, or a harness fitting or rein guide etc.
