Rim sherd of a ceramic vessel of Late Medieval date, probably the second half of the fifteenth century (AD 1450 – AD 1500). The breaks are old. Length 48mm, width 55mm and 9mm thick. Weight 38.60g.

The sherd is a fragment of a jar with an everted rim which has an internal bevel that is angled inwards and downwards from the top of the rim. The fabric is orange coloured with an inner grey core and is heavily tempered with medium/fine white sand. Decoration on the exterior surface is in the form of two parallel grooves on the underside of the rim and a continuous curvilinear groove on the shoulder. There are small splashes of a dark green glaze on the underside of the rim. It can be estimated that, when complete, the outer diameter of the rim would have been about 20cm.

Notes:

The sherd is probably from a Knighton Ware jar. See, Fennelly, L. R. 1970. “A Late Medieval Kiln at Knighton, Isle of Wight”. Proceedings of the Hampshire Field Club and Archaeological Society. Vol. XXVI (for 1969). 106, fig. 39, ref. 25.
