An incomplete copper-alloy strap or harness fitting of Roman date, c.AD 50 - 200. The fitting is a pointed ovate in plan with a central raised circular boss within a circumferential recess. The pointed terminals are also raised. A break is present from one edge, extending into the central recess. Two integral, circular sectioned shanks project from the reverse of the terminals, representing the remains of an attachment loop.
The metal has a dark red/brown patina and survives in fair condition. The object is 33.1mm long, 15.6mm wide, 5.7mm thick (10.6mm with shanks) and weighs 6.7g.
The form of the main plate of this fitting is similar to button and loop fasteners of Wild Class Va (see: YORYM-965A30) which date to c.1st - 2nd century AD. A variety of similar fittings have also been recorded on the PAS database. For examples see: YORYM-5DF5AA, YORYM-4C1771 and NCL-DD1C05
