Post Medieval lead alloy cloth seal, c.1600-1700AD. Thickness: 3 mm, diameter: 16 mm, weight: 1.87 grams.
The seal is sub-circular and incomplete and was probably a two part seal. It is decorated on one surface with a three part castle with central tower and gate with large door in front. This is flanked by turrets, each one has an enlarged arrow slit - a vertical slit with rounded terminals. Each turret has a domed roof with spherical finial and a lipped edge below. The other surface is incomplete but what is present appears to be stamped with large letters, possibly an I showing in the centre with an incomplete letter to the right.
The seal is similar to LON-AB200D and and has been identified as a Norwich seal, with the castle being the arms of City and County. This seal features in Elton, S.F. (2017) ' Cloth seals - an illus. guide..' along with LON- 438A4B p. 105.BSG.CS.00189. However, the castle device is also very similar to a seal listed in the same publication as a Colchester 'english community say' seal on p.80 BSG.CS.00862
