Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy 'Fob Dangler' probably dating to between c200 BC to c100 AD. The object comprises a suspension loop and three arms spiralling from a central hub in a Triskele triple spiral. Each of the arms narrows and curves to form a circle with an approximate external diameter of 18mm and pierced with a round hole with an approximate internal diameter of 11mm. On the outer edge of each spiralling arm is a slightly curved short bar measuring approximately 17mm x 4mm, these are probably remnants of ring that originally ran around the circumference of the object. On the rear face there is a short central shank terminating in the suspension loop (external diameter 22mm, internal diameter 12mm). The length is 45mm, width 45mm, thickness 31mm, and the weight 25.54g.
'Fobs or danglers are a poorly understood artefact type, and may have been hung from items of equipment, personal apparel or harness decoration (Jope 2000, p 285). Jope (ibid.) records seventeen known examples of danglers and related 'hangers' from Britain, while Macgregor (1976a, p 37) records nine known examples of triskele-decorated fobs from the British Isles. The triskele motif is commonly found on objects of the La Tène culture during the European Iron Age.' (Tyacke 2014).
