Unique ID: SOM-DD4914

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A fragment of a Post-Medieval copper alloy spoon, probably dating to c. AD 1550-1700. The fragment comprises of the upper half of the bowl, probably originally piriform, but now truncated by a worn break, and with a trapzoidal indentation at the top from the lost handle. Positioned near centrally below the handle is a maker's mark, depicting a five-petalled double-rose within an inner circle.

Dimensions: 35.8mm; 44.4 1.7mm; weight 11.05g.

A brass spoon with a similar maker's mark is published by Egan (2005: 119, no. 580), excavated from a context dating to c. 1650-1700. A similar maker's mark also appears on a seal-topped spoon recorded on this database, SOM-7C2A26, a type dated by Homer (1975) to the 16th and 17th centuries. Other, incomplete, spoons with similar maker's marks are also recorded on this database, cf. PUBLIC-85960E, HAMP-3AFB14.
