An incomplete base silver penny of Philip and Mary (1554-1558). Initial mark: halved rose and castle. London mint. (North 1991: 129, ref: 1976). Abraded and clipped flan.

Obverse description: Double rose. Obverse inscription: P.Z.M.DG.RO[SA SINE].

Reverse description: Long cross fourchée over royal shield. Reverse inscription: [CI]VI/TA[S]/LON]DON

Notes:

The coin is refered to as 'base' or 'billon' as it has only about 1/3rd silver. This debasement allowed a much larger and more 'usable' coin to be struck.
