An incomplete Post-Medieval lead alnage cloth seal. The object is a single incomplete disc of an originally two or four-disc seal. It is stamped with a design representing a thistle, composed of raised pellets and surmounted by a crown. The disc is sub-circular in shape retaining much of it's original edge to the left of the design. To the right however, the edge of the disc is missing (about 10-15%) and the breaks are worn and irregular. Above the design is possibly the remnant of a broken connecting strip, by which it was joined to another disc. Alternatively this could be part of the disc itself which has become mangled.
To the left of the pinecone motif is a small letter or other figure resembling a C, which is partly obscured by wear. Further left of this the edge of a circular border can be seen.
Length: 17.4mm. Width: 13.3mm. Thickness:1.4mm. Weight: 1.41g
Other similar examples on this database, revealing more of the left-hand side of the crowned thistle design, are SF4629, SOM-78E8F9 and SOM-46B8EC. They are probably alnage seals of the time of James I or later.
