A Roman copper alloy plate gilded disc brooch. The oval plate has a raised border around a recessed area encircling a central setting containing a pointed oval jet black glass stone. The surrounding area is decorated with a very worn but possible geometric design, the majority of which is still gilded. On the reverse is a worn but complete spring and a catch-plate missing its curl. The pin is missing.
Length 23.8mm. Width 19.1mm. Thickness 13.2mm. Thickness of plate, not including glass, pin-lug and catch-plate 4.9mm. The glass Central setting length: 15.9mm. Central setting width 11.1mm. Weight 5.4g.
