A worn and corroded copper-alloy clapper bell of possible Roman or Early Medieval date (c. AD 43-1100). The bell is incomplete as the clapper is missing. th eobject is conical in form with sides that flare out from the apex. At the upper edge is an intergral suspension loop that has a circular perforation. The suspension loop is angular and broadly lozenge shaped in form. The bell is undecorated and has a mid-green coloured patina. It has been flattened and the rim has suffered some damage, probably from th eplough soil.
There are several bells to be found on the PAS database with externally angled loops which are paralleled among Roman finds such as: NARC-D9C172 and NMS-4892B4which are dated to the 1st-2nd centuries AD. However there are also to others on the website which are dated to the Late Saxon period, e.g. examples from Chippenham, Cambridgeshire (SF-2C7AE4), Barham, Suffolk (SF-4A8FA1), Paulespury and Northamptonshire (NARC-D9C172).
The bell measures 29.38 mm in height, 28.63 mm in width, 2.33 mm in thickness and weighs 5.7 grams.
