A copper alloy probable Roman ear-ring ring, dating to the period circa AD 43-400.

The object is circular and forms an incomplete hoop which has a sub-oval cross-section. The terminals are narrowed and pointed. The ends almost meet and are slightly angled away from each other. The object has a mid-brown coloured patina across all surfaces with a small trace of gilding.

Objects of this shape are quite common finds from Roman contexts and are usually interpreted as earrings (Allason-Jones "Ear-Rings in Roman Britain", this is interpreted as Type 1 common from 1st to the 4th century). Similar objects have, however, also been found from later, Early Medieval contexts, where they are interpreted as finger rings or earrings (Rogers "Anglian and other finds from Fishergate" pages 1370-1371, inc fig 668, artefacts 5411-5413). There are a number of parallels recorded on the PAS database including (SUSS-0BA444) discovered in West Sussex and (LIN-9E3535) discovered in Lincolnshire.

The object measures 25.29 mm in length by 24.73 mm wide. It has a thickness of 2.72 mm and weighs 2.4 grams.
