A Post-Medieval lead two-part cloth seal. The seal comprises of two lead discs which were originally joined by a connecting strip, which has broken off and is missing. There is an integral rivet projecting from disc one through a perforation in disc two. Disc one is stamped with a design featuring four parallel lines within a circle. The design on disc two features a retrograde figure 4 with cross on the end of its elongated horizontal leg. The vertical leg of the 4 extends downwards and joins the vertical of a combined retrograde uppercase D and an F. Diameter: 20.1mm. Thickness: 73.5mm. Weight: 7.6g
This was probably a cloth seal used by a weaver, dyer or searcher. The use of a privy or merchants mark suggests a broad late 16th to 18th century date. A number of comparable seals are published by Egan (1994: 181-183), although no exact parallels were found. For a similar example, see SOM-EE33C3 on this database.
