Copper-alloy fragment of a Roman Headstud brooch (c. 75 - 175 AD). The fragment consists of a flat, tapering bow which is rectangular in section. At the wider head end, pointed protrusions to each side form the head of the brooch, decorated on the front surface by faint vertical ridges. The brooch head is grooved behind to provide space for a spring mechanism, now missing. In the centre of the groove is a broken half of a circular lug that would have held the spring mechanism in place. There is a further broken half of a circular lug on top of the head, which would have served a similar purpose. There is a moulded circular 'stud' on the front surface of the bow just below the head, with an inner raised circular section within this. Below the stud is a pattern of three indented squares running down the bow. The foot of the brooch is missing. The brooch has a matt dark green patina. It is 24.35mm in length, 16.80mm at maximum width and 6.55mm at maximum thickness. It is 7.66g in weight.
