Copper-alloy Roman Headstud brooch, missing only its foot (c. 75 - 175 AD). This is a hinged example, with two solid tubular wings at the head with a slot for the pin. Longitudinal ridges adorn the front faces of the tubular wings and there is a transverse groove running across the top. The pin is still extant and bent out of shape; it is circular in section with a sub-rectangular lug at the end with a perforation for attachment. The length of the pin is 18.23mm. The bow curves forwards and down from this, tapering towards the foot but broken off before the end. There is a small longitudinal ridge on the front face just below the hinge mechanism. Below this is a circular 'stud' moulded and protruding from the bow with concentric indented circles that retain red and yellow enamel. The back face of the brooch below the stud is indented. Thereafter the bow is square in section. The surface of the brooch is worn and mottled; it is dark brown in colour with patches of green copper-corrosion. The length of the brooch is 29.97mm, it is 20.50mm in width and 6.66mm at maximum thickness. The weight of the brooch is 8.50g.
Hattatt considers the hinged variants of this brooch type to be a later development (1982, 74-9)
