WEIGHT

Object type certainty: Certain

Lead weight. A cast globular weight of a significant mass exceeding 500gms [the limit of weighing machines available to this reporter]. Patinated, with numerous straight cuts in its sides. The finder correctly notes the similarity of the object to those steelyard weights ascribed to the Roman period, though it lacks any evidence for means of suspension enabling it to function in that way - unless the cut-marks were deliberately inflicted to furnish tying notches. The object has a slightly flattened base which would at least enable its function as a standing weight. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410.

Height: 51.6mm, Diameter: 51.7mm
