A copper alloy bell probably of Medieval date, AD 1100 - 1400. It is cast copper alloy with four tabs at the base which are folded inwards to hold the pea and form the spherical bell. In the centre of the upper hemisphere is projecting rod of circular cross section, the end of which is flattened and pierced with a circular perforation to create a suspension loop. There is no decoration. The bell is 20.9mm long and 13.2mm in diameter. It weighs 4gm.
Compare BUC-B5A456 for bells in situ on a harness fitting, as well as NLM-5BC82C, NLM-2EBA35 with its attachment mount, and GLO-16B711 which notes that: "Similar styles of bells that were found in London came exclusively from 13th century contexts (Egan and Pritchard, 1991, 338) (Ottaway and Rogers, 2002, 2947). However, a pewter example found in York was discovered in an early 12th century context (Ottaway and Rogers, 2002, 2947), which means that although a 13th century date is most likely a 12th century date should not be ruled out."
