STRAP END

Unique ID: SF-F8A02A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from a composite strap end of Medieval date, c. 1250-1400. The upper portion of the strap-end is missing, this piece consists only the very bottom of the object, which demonstrates notched sides and a cruciform terminal with trilobed arms. Two circular sectioned rivets, one each at the lower and upper edge of the fragment, secure the plates and internal spacer together. Preserved in fair condition, it survives to a length of 27.90mm, and 13.65mm wide by 2.06mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 3.42g.

Similar elaborate terminals are visible on strap-ends illustrated by Egan (2007, p. 135, no. 1534) and Egan and Pritchard )1991, p. 131, no. 608). For a complete example recorded by the PAS, see record SF-763983.
