A gold signet ring dating to the late 16th or 17th century. The finger-ring has a flat sub-circular bezel engraved with a monogram within an inner plain and outer beaded border. The monogram consists of the bold seriffed initials IT, with the T superimposed on the I. The T has a curled stem. The edge of the bezel is decorated with a further row of beading and a plain incised line which delineates the top of the narrow shoulders. The shoulders taper to a slender hoop, which is now distorted. This form of ring is characteristic of signet rings of the period.
Dimensions: Diameter of bezel: 16mm; width of hoop at base: 2.1mm; weight: 13.9g.
Metal content: The precious metal content of the ring fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%.
Notes:
This find was declared Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996, but unfortunately no museum was able to acquire the ring. The finger ring was returned to the finder.
