Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Chapter 3, Part 3, Group 4a or 4b, Plate 46, AD c. 75-400. The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical incomplete wings with a trace of a perforated wing cap. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is a trace of an integral hook. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is undecorated. There are mouldings on the side of the bow head. The bow is oval in section and tapers to a blunt broken terminal.
The surface of the brooch has an incomplete mid brown patina.
It measures 39.45mm in length, 14.09mm in width, and weighs 9.8g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type, Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands. Mackreth classifies this type as Group 4a or 4b dating to late 1st to 4th century.
