An incomplete copper-alloy bell of probable Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The bell has a conical triangular shape with a wide base and sides which taper to a pointed apex from which the remains of an attachment loop project. The rim of the bell is rolled inward and a small portion has been lost to worn breaks. The clapper and clapper suspension system no longer remain and the bell is undecorated.
The metal has a mid-green/brown patina and is worn. The bell is 29.2mm tall, 27.9mm x 31.4mm at the base, 1.1mm thick and weighs 18.2g.
Numerous conical bells have been recorded with the PAS including SF-0D8879, SWYOR-FE6F46, BH-F352F7 and YORYM-D0D776. These bells are generally dated to the Roman period.
Three similar examples, two of which are unstratified, are illustrated in Crummy, p.127 and are described as probably being from the collars of cows, sheep, goat, and possibly domestic pets.
