DRESS HOOK

Unique ID: IOW-D4A7DD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy dress hook (1500-1700). Read Class E, Type 7 or Class K, Type 4.

The hook is largely missing due to a transverse break.

This dress-hook has a sub-cordate/sub-circular openwork body with a sub-rectangular attachment loop. Central over the body is a cross in saltire with holes between the arms and the border. The terminals of the cross protrude as knops. A small portion of the hook adjacent to the body bears a 'V'-shaped groove as decoration. The rear face is flat and plain.

There is green patina on both faces with pitting and minor patches of off-white corrosion products.

This dress hook can be classified as Read's Early Post-Medieval Class E, Type 7 or Class K, Type 4.

Although these published finds are similar to this Isle of Wight find, they lack the openwork qualities (Read 2008, 113, ref: 457; 127, ref: 523).

Compare with: HAMP-EBED67; SF-FDA128 and WILT-448EBA.

Class: Read Class E, Type 7 or Class K, Type 4
