An incomplete Roman copper-alloy composite double-disc brooch (c. AD100-c. 200). Due to breaks and abrasion at the edges, the disc is now sub-circular in plan with traces of 4 flat knops equi-distant around the edge. In the centre there is a rivet hole which on the reverse holds in place a bar with a catchplate at one terminal and two semi-circular perforated lugs at the other. The lugs form the hinge for the pin which is now missing.
The outer face of the brooch has linear striations which are possibly decoration rather than accidental. This surface also has traces of a white alloy coating or wash. Otherwise the surface of the brooch has a dark grey-green patina.
The brooch measures 27.23mm long, 23.21mm wide, 5.69mm thick and weighs 2.48g.
Compare with similar brooches published by Hattatt and dated to the 2nd century AD (Hattatt 1989: 1658 and Hattat (1987:1272). On the PAS database IOW-A346E9 and IOW-C651A3 are similar.
