Late Iron Age to early Roman or Romano British copper alloy knobbed terret ring dating to between c50 BC and c150 AD. It is roughly D-shaped. There is a flattened bar across the base which would have allowed attachment to a strap. To either side of this there is a raised collar. The curved frame extends from these. It is oval in cross-section and tapers gradually towards the upper part of the terret. At the apex of the loop there is a central collared knob between two further collars. It is quite unusual in that it has only one knop or knob on the loop. Most terrets with the same general plan have either three or none. The length is 63mm, width 57mm, thickness 10mm, and the weight 44.85g.
There are parallels recorded on the database, (LIN-F0FAB4) discovered in Lincolnshire and DUR-E57027, discovered in Northumberland. Mills (2000) discusses how terret rings were used as rein guides on chariots or carts, the reins would have passed through the open ring for guiding the horses. They were used during the Late Iron Age to Early Roman period. Mills illustrates a similar example (No.RC33) and suggests it dates to the late 1st century AD. Mills suggests the larger terret rings may have been mounted on the chariot itself.
