FINGER RING

Unique ID: HAMP-A99795

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete and squashed post-medieval gold finger-ring, missing its setting. The bezel was originally oval or circular in shape, the sides are now squashed inwards. The outer edges of the bezel are fluted, a line of inverted U-shapes with a U-shaped depression at the centre of each. Traces of black enamel can be seen both inside and around the fluting. Traces of a white substance, presumably a fixant, can be seen inside the bezel. The hoop is triangular in cross-section, being flat to the inside surface. The shoulders are decorated with a scrolling foliate design above a trio of inverted leaves. Traces of black enamel are visible here too.
The finger-ring measures 24.3mm in height and 20.2mm in width. It is max.6.4mm thick at the bezel (which is 9.4mm in length). The back of the hoop measures 2.0x1.3mm, expanding to 2.9x1.4mm at the shoulders. It weighs 2.83g.
The style of bezel together with the black enamel and foliate decoration suggests this may have originally been a mourning ring, cf. LVPL-4375BC. This parallel mentions an example in the British Museum collection (reference AF.1572) which is dated c.1690-1720.
