A fragment of a copper alloy early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) annular brooch. Just under 1/4 of the original brooch survives. The hoop is 6.49mm wide and flattened. Its outer face is decorated with a row of small incised crescent-shapes running along the centre. One end terminates in an abrupt break and the other is more rounded, suggesting that it may be one side of a pin constriction
Annular brooches appear in female graves, often in pairs, from the late 5th or 6th century, but the form with the slot is found primarily in contexts dating to c.AD 480-500, becoming less common into the 6th century when it is replaced by a round hole (Penn and Brugmann 2007). It is likely that this example belongs to the former group, although this is not certain.
