An incomplete copper alloy unidentified object of probable early medieval to medieval date. It is long and narrow with a break at both ends, a flattened reverse face and convex outer face. The main body of the object is 16.87mm long, its outer face swelling towards the inner end creating a slight S-shape in profile. Extending from the inner end is a narrower section, its outer end curving slightly towards the rear, suggesting that it was hooked originally. Its outer face is decorated with several fine transverse grooves at the join with the other section. The breaks are both quite fresh.
The object appears to have been hooked at one end and so perhaps was a strap fitting of some sort or even a buckle pin. No visible means of attachment can be seen now, however.
Finder suggests that this may be an Anglo-Saxon hanging bowl mount/escutcheon, but it would be very small in size for this.
