Post Medieval lead alloy tag, 43mm in length, 38mm wide and 5mm thick, with a weight of 50.36grams.

The object is circular in form, with a projecting sub circular loop which is rectangular in cross section. One side has a design consisting of a raised ligated monogram consisting of the letters AH/ME/W with a flower motif to one side, which is set within a beaded circular border. The reverse is decorated with a raised crowned N. Theres is a small hole piercing the lower part of the N which is just showing through onto the front.

The object is thought to be a makers seal used on metal rods and wire products of the early modern period across Northern Europe. An 18th century shipwreck, the Terschelling, provided evidence of similar tags. (see image from ). Allex Kussendrager confirms that this type of seal is from Northeim, Germany (Mitchiner Vol. 2 #3002) and dates to the early 17th C. Two similar examples can be seen at BERK-738912 and LVPL-53C7C1 and many more on http://www.loodjes.nl/Handelsloden/Handelsloden.htm
