A fragment of a Humber Ware vessel of medieval date, c.AD 1250 - 1500. The object is a partial neck and handle from a large jug.

The remaining portion of the neck has a curved profile and the handle is ovate in section. The upper surface of the handle is decorated with eight parallel grooves, giving a ribbed appearance. Large thumb print impressions are present to either side of the handle where is joins the vessel proper. The handle is 75.4mm wide and 20.4mm thick.

The fabric is hard fired with a grey core and red edges. It has a rough texture. An olive-green glaze covers most of the fragments and traces of a yellow slip can also be determined.

The vessel is 110mm in overall length. 127.9mm wide and 9.4mm thick at the neck. It weighs 359g.

Humber Wares were most popular from the late 14th to 15th centuries and were produced at a number of sites around the Humber area, including West Cowick and Holme-upon-Spalding Moor. The vessel forms are competently made but utilitarian and functional in appearance. The main form are jugs, cisterns and urinals.
