Cast lead or lead alloy undecorated spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD); most probably Roman date (AD 100-400). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The central hole is circular (diameter 8.4mm) with straight sides. The external rim / edge also is also straight - convex / rounded . Both the upper and lower faces of the whorl are undecorated but both have surface scratches through abrasion. The spindle whorl is a light grey cream colour with an even but eroded patina. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery). This form is often attributed to the Roman period.
The whorl measures 30.6mm diameter, is 8.0mm thick. It weighs 44.01 grams
