Object type certainty: Certain

A fragment of a Small Long Brooch of Early Medieval date (AD 500-600). The object is composed of a small square plate, with notches removed from the lower corners. The plate is decorated on the upper face with an incised, double linear border, with an outer row of repeating transverse notches.

On the reverse of the brooch there is a vertical integral lug with a central circular perforation.

Protruding from the lower edge of the headplate is an integral bow, which is convex on the outer face, concave on the reverse and D shaped in section. The bow has moulding on the upper and lower edge giving this portion of the bow a lightly pyramidal appearance. The lower edge of the bow has a double transverse line below which the bow is broken.

The pin, partial bow, foot and catchplate are missing due to old and abraded breaks.
The metal is mid-green in colour with areas of light green corrosion product.
