A probable miscast Medieval to Post-medieval copper alloy pot-leg or foot, retaining a large casting sprue, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1800. The object comprises of a sub-pentagonal element at one end, sub-rectangular in cross section, but with a pronounced central ridge on one face. This section measures 35.9mm long, 32.2mm wide by 16.8mm thick. Expanding from the pointed terminal of this section is a long sub-rectangular sprue c. 48.4mm long, 13.8mm wide and 8.1mm thick, with an irregular surface. The object is incomplete, terminating an a worn break at its broad end.

Overall dimensions: length 86.4mm; width 32.2mm; thickness 16.8mm; weight 106.10g.

Although this identification is tentative, the object appears to be a miscast or unfinished fragment of a pot-fot, probably Butler, Green & Payne's (2009) type A. Whilst the legs were luted onto large vessels such as cauldrons, skillets and vessels of comparable size were cast as one in an upside-down mould (Butler & Green 2003: 26), possibly explaining the unusual sprue.

Class: Pot foot/leg
