A cast lead fishing-net weight, sub-circular in plan with a central perforation and sub-rectangular in section. The central hole is sub-oval in shape, 6 mm long and 4 mm wide and appears to have been made by casting the molten metal around a narrow object. The impression of a twisted cord is visible on one side where it exits the central hole at the top and re-enters it at the bottom. The surface of the weight is patinated overall and is pitted and marked by several crude impressions, suggesting that the weight was crushed to fasten it to a cord whilst still in a semi-molten state. This object contrasts with weights formed by rolling sheet metal and more closely resembles weights of recent date used for coastal fishing that date from Post-Medieval period c.1500-1800. Examples of this type of weight have been recorded on the database, including NARC-4620FA from Northamptonshire and DENO-D679D9 and DENO-912387 from Nottinghamshire.
Margeson (1993) illustrates similar lead net weights on page 138, fig.103, nos.937-938 which are dated from the Post-medieval period.
