A complete copper alloy Medieval to Post-Medieval thimble. The thimble has a domed top with a hole right in the center. The small, round indentation on the outside were added by hand, as determined by their irregular shape. They are arranged in vertical lines with concentric circles around the top. The top is left bare, forming a tonsure-like patch with a single hole in the very centre.
According to Holmes (1999), thimbles with tonsures were in use from the 14th century onwards, declining in use until they died out altogether around the mid 17th century. The hand-punched indentations with their simple pattern also confirms this early date. Ranging date suggested AD 1300-1650.
