Cast copper alloy decorative mount in the form of a lion or dog, probably of Roman date. The mount is comparatively small with an overall surviving length of 21.5mm, a maximum width of 10.1mm and a height of 8.5mm. The mount weighs 2.9g. The small size of the mount makes the finer detail of the beast difficult to discern. The beast is sitting with front legs extending forwards and mouth slightly open. The ears are eroded, but appear to have been upright. The back legs are folded against the sides of the body. The rear of the beast has a U-shaped fork; it is possibly broken and may have had an attachment loop, perhaps formed from the animal’s tail. The underside of the mount has a single circular integral attachment rivet of 3.6mm diameter. The mount may have been attached to a Lion bow brooch of 1st century AD date. A similar mount attached to a brooch was recorded by Hattatt (1989) No. 1469, which also has the similar U-shaped fork at the rear. The mount may also have derived from a vessel, lid of a box or similar.
