STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: SOM-A7D0D3

Object type certainty: Certain

An Early Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, probably dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The mount consists of a hollow domed boss with four, roughly equally spaced, irregularly sized lobes projecting from the edge, each deliniated by a raised, transverse collar at the junction between it and the boss and with a drilled perforation. Traces of iron rivets survive in all four lobes. The front of the boss is decorated with a slightly irregular saltire, with two incised lines defining each arm.

Dimensions: length 28.5mm; width 28.2mm; thickness 5.3mm; weight 10.09g.

Read (2001: 16, no. 118) publishes a similar example, suggesting that that it is a 14th c. bookfitting; a broadly comparable probable book fitting is published by Egan (1998: 280, no. 926), found in a context dating to c. AD 1350-1400. If the attribution as a book fitting is accepted it would probably fit into Howsam's (2016: 88) type B.1.2, with excavated examples dating from the 14th c. to early Post-Medieval period. See also: YORYM-881AB1, BH-922C44, NARC-719675. However, none of those examples illustrated by Howsam (ibid: fig. 2-39) closely resemble this example, and its thickness and that it would not lie flat on the book would make this identification unlikely to be correct. A more likely attribution is an an Early-Medieval strap junction, very broadly resembling those objects illustrated by Williams (2007), cf. SUR-77216D, BH-BCC447, see also SOMDOR428, which features zoomorphic decoration.
