An incomplete Medieval copper alloy swivel, probably dating to c. AD 1100-1500. The item comprises of a single loop, sub-circular in plan and cross-section. Flanking the base and graping it within their jaws are a pair of zoomorphic mouldings. The base itself is oval in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section, its latteral edge decorated with a zig-zag pattern of drilled circular depressions. A circular sectioned shank projects from the base.

Dimensions: length 25.6mm; width 22.0mm; thickness of loop at apex 2.8mm; thickness at base 10.3mm; diameter of shank 4.7mm; weight 5.82g.

A similar loop can be seen attached to a strap distributer decorated in the romanesque style and inlaid with silver, found at Rattray Castle (Hinton 2005: 182). cf. similar examples on this database DEV-BD6BF4, PUBLIC-9CE500 and DUR-6AEB8E.
