An incomplete copper alloy Roman flat enamelled disc brooch (AD c. 80 - c. 250). The brooch has an oval-shaped plate, but edges are worn and the enamelled design suggests that the brooch was originally circular. The design consists of a central circular cell, missing its enamel inlay, with a wide copper alloy border. Surrounding this is a wide circle of blue enamel with six raised copper alloy pellets arranged in a circle within the enamel. Two very similar brooches are depicted in Hattatt (1989, p.344, fig. 203, nos 1029 and 1030), indicating that this brooch was originally circular. The reverse of the brooch is flat. The hinge mechanism is still intact, but the pin is missing. The stump of the catchplate is also present but is missing its curl. Overall, the brooch measures 21.5 mm long, 16.2 mm wide and 4.9 mm thick. The plate measures 1.9 mm thick. It weighs 2.60 g.
