A Medieval copper alloy pedastal-type seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1250-1400. The seal has a circular base, although its edges are highly abraded, from the reverse of which expands the faceted hexagonal-sectioned pedastal handle. The handle terminates in a trefoilate knop, with a drilled circuar perforation to form a loop, and with this preceded by a rounded collar. The face of the seal is engraved with a probable depiction of St. Margaret of Antioch, a female figure standing left with head bowed, to the left is a cross-topped staff with the engraving framed by palm fronds, that on the left being vertical, on right being double-stranded and curved. Although unclear, a speckled curvilinear element below the figure's feet likely reprsesents a dragon. The inscription reads SAV[NCTA (MARGARETA)] in retrograde.

Dimensions: diameter 18.7mm; height 26.1mm; width of terminal 7.4mm; thickness of terminal 6.0mm; weight 8.86g.

Harvey & McGuiness (1996) suggest that anonymous personal seals of this form date, for the most part, to the 14th century. Comparable examples on this database include: IHS-E00A11, LANCUM-23A3F1, IHS-4D55B8 and DEV-719BB5. A further similar matrix is published by Griffiths, Philpott & Egan (2007: 182 no. 2314).
