A complete post medieval copper alloy cutlery handle, probably a knife handle, dating from c.17th century. The handle is oval in cross section with a circular opening at one end for attachment. The handle is in the shape of an openwork crowned lion holding a long oval shield. The lion is standing on its hind legs with the tail hanging in between. On the body of the lion are three raised curved lines wither side representing the ribs. The shield is placed in front of the body, with the lion's paws resting along the top of the shield. There is no visible decoration on the shield. The lion has an anthropomorphic face and is moulded with rounded cheeks, a long nose and oval eyes. There is a circular indentation either side of the mouth, one of which on the left side is filled with copper alloy. On the sides and the back of the head the mane is represented by moulded crescents, which are scale like. The crown sits on the top of the head and is decorated with openwork, with four bands curving up to two circular knops which sit on the top. In between each band is a rounded knop. The knife handle has a dark green patina, and measures 72.5mm in length, 13.9mm in width and 10.5mm in thickness. The handle weighs 26.87g.
