A lead conical probable weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1800. It is also possible that this object is a gaming piece. The artefact is a slanting cone with an uneven surface. There is a conical hole in the base which extends abouy 5mm into the centre of ther weight. The object has a smooth white patina. It is 14.9mm tall, 18.2mm diameter and 20.02g.
Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional artefact, and forms and styles do not alter significantly over time. Weights such as this have been used from Roman through to post-medieval times and numerous weight-related functions are likely, perhaps as a steelyard weight, standing weight, net weight or fishing weight.
