An incomplete copper alloy Roman continental plate brooch. It is lozenge shaped, with a small lug extending from each outer corner. One of these lugs is almost completely missing, while the other is damaged, but appears to have been of circular shape with an engraved ring and dot decoration on its outer face. Additional lugs may have extended from each central corner originally, but if so are now missing. The outer face of the plate has a raised border c.3mm wide around the outer edge, and in the centre of this are five raised annulets arranged in a lozenge. These annulets and the space around them appear to have been filled with enamel originally, but only a tiny trace of this now survives within the central annulet. To the reverse at one end there is a double lug pin fitting, which still holds an in situ copper alloy axis bar, and at the other end is the remains of a small catch-plate. The surface of the metal is fairly corroded and the breaks are well worn.
It probably belongs to Feugére's Type 26d1 ('fibules émaillées de forme géométrique simple - de forme losangique'), which on the continent appear to date from the end of the 1st century AD to the middle of the 3rd century AD. See also IOW-D11D76 for a similar example recorded with the PAS.
