An incomplete Georgian silver 'porte crayon' or propelling pencil, probaby dating 1800-1830. The pencil is formed of a ribbed cylinder with a collar around the centre. The collar has a central raised band decorated with possible floral motifs, flanked on either side by a beaded band and a plain band. The object is damaged at both ends and is now slightly bent. A rectangular slot is located at the nib-end; the bend now exposes the interior, revealing a reeled mechanism with a pencil at one end.
Similar casings from porte crayons are recorded on the PAS database (e.g. LIN-F7D783 and ESS-C521B5).
