Treasure Case 2017 T1133: Medieval Finger Ring

Description:

A gold medieval 'stirrup-shaped' finger ring with a blue stone setting (AD c.1200-c.1300).

The hoop of the ring is is broadly circular in shape and D-shaped in cross-section (flat on the inside edge). The bezel and shoulders are broadly triangular in shape with bevelled inner edged. The seeing is a hexagonal blue stone, possibly a sapphire, facetted on the sides and cabochon on top.

Overall, the ring measures 29.4 mm in length from top of the bezel to the back of the hoop, has an external diameter of 23.1 mm and a hoop width of 5.0 mm. The hoop's thickness is 1.2 mm at the back and 1.6 at the sides. The bezel is 8.8 mm thick. The setting measures 5.4 mm long and 3.7 mm wide. It weighs 9.79 g.

Discussion:

Similar items have been reported under the Treasure Act 1996 and recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. A similar but smaller example from Kelham Hills, Nottinghamshire is 2015 T532 (DENO-E5352D).

The object is over 300 years old and is made up of more than 10% silver. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
